Some hikes along the coast will follow ancient trails paved with stepping stones that were carried from the ocean by the old Hawaiians to ease their ti-leaf-sandaled feet over jagged lava flows. These hikes will sometimes include stops at white sand beaches where we can enjoy excellent swimming. We expect to see native plants and possibly green sea turtles. We'll also hike in rainforests and through lava craters and monitor "creeping developments" endangering the open land of this idyllic island.
After settling into our rooms, we will meet for a welcome dinner, which is included in the trip price.

Day 2-4: The next three days will be spent hiking, swimming, and snorkeling in the Kona area. There will be an optional kayak trip offered on Day 3.

Day 5-7: We will drive the northern route to Hilo, stopping for short walks along the way in a native ohia forest and Akaka Falls State Park. We will stay in Hilo for three nights in a hotel with fully furnished kitchens, so we'll have a choice of eating at one of the area's restaurants or the hotel. Our breakfasts will include fresh Hawaiian fruits grown on the premises. One day will feature a hike in Volcanoes National Park in Volcano. Volcanoes National Park contains two of the world's most active volcanoes - Kilauea and Mauna Loa - and offers insight into how the Hawaiian Islands were formed.

Day 8: We will depart from the airport in Hilo on Saturday. There is an excellent Farmer's Market in Hilo on Saturday mornings, so you might want to visit it to provision yourself for the long flight home!

Getting There

Please note that this trip begins in Kona and ends in Hilo. Flights from the mainland are frequent. Please plan to arrive in Kona by mid-afternoon on Day 1 of the trip. The trip concludes after breakfast on the last day. Mid-morning flights to the mainland are usually available. If you are coming from the East Coast, you may want to consider breaking this flight into two segments, stopping on the West Coast on your way to Hawaii, or arriving in Kona a day or two before the trip begins. Flight delays can interrupt an on-time arrival in Kona.

Accommodations and Food

Participants will share comfortable but modest accommodations in two unique Big Island hotels, with two people per room. All rooms have private baths. Distant views of the Pacific and neighboring islands greet us in Kona. Our Hilo hotel borders a rainforest area, where birds of many varieties can be observed. Come prepared to enjoy great Island eats! Breakfasts and lunches (as well as our first dinner) are provided in the trip cost. For our dinners out, the leaders will suggest a wide variety of possible choices.

Trip Difficulty

This trip is appropriate for people who enjoy hiking on a regular basis. We will be walking over uneven surfaces, so boots with ankle support are required. Daily mileages will range from 4 to 8 miles, and our pace will be leisurely. It is important to remember that the tropics add a dimension of heat and humidity that is not often found in mainland hiking. It is important to carry adequate water each day. The importance of a regular exercise regime before considering this trip cannot be over-emphasized.

Equipment and Clothing

Hawaii is a casual destination. Expect to wear shorts and T-shirts most of the time. Some of the basic items are lug-soled boots (well broken-in), raingear, a daypack, two-liter water bottles, sun block, a hat, a long sleeved shirt, and a bathing suit. A more complete clothing and equipment list will be sent to approved trip participants.

Conservation

Several issues concerning conservation and env ironmental policies and practices directly affect the preservation of the Islands, and we will discuss them during our outing. Water rights have long been a controversial subject. Large amounts of water have been diverted from taro production to the cultivation of sugar and pineapple. Water pollution and pesticide control continue to be problematic. Many island residents are concerned about the sustainability of increasing tourism. Coastal access, a traditional Hawaiian right, is being constantly challenged as development continues. We will each have an opportunity to share and compare environmental actions in our local communities with those observed in Hawaii. Come prepared to talk!
Getting there a day or two before the trip gives some interesting options for those curious about history and the Tlingit native culture. Visit Chief Shakes Island, Tribal House Historic Monument, and Petroglyph Beach State Historic Park. Travel the mighty Stikine River, experiencing the same incredible scenery, glaciers, wildlife, and adventures as those of the gold miners. There will be an optional (but strongly encouraged) get-together the evening before the trip begins to get acquainted and take a look at the trip plan. Our flexible daily itinerary will be based upon group interests, weather conditions, and, of course, animal sightings. Therefore, what follows is only a typical itinerary.
We have obtained a permit for a visit to the Anan Bear Observatory through the Forest Service's lottery system. On the way, we would take a short hike to Virginia Lake, where the hardy could enjoy a chilly swim. The Anan Creek has the largest run of pink salmon in southeast Alaska. It has long been used by bears and humans as a fishing and food-gathering site. Twenty-five years ago, the U.S. Forest Service improved a trail to the falls and built a simple observatory on the site of a former Tlingit village. The Forest Service has a half-mile boardwalk trail, deck area, and blind that give us an opportunity to watch the bears up close.
Day 3: Heading north through the Wrangell Narrows, we will stop at some interesting petroglyph-inscribed rocks before stopping for a stroll through Petersburg, an interesting small town. A hike through a nearby bog will reveal the fascinating unique plants in that environment. Continuing north on Frederick Sound to Thomas Bay, we’ll stop to take a hike up Cascade Creek.

Days 4-5: With good weather, we’ll awake to see spectacular Baird Glacier. Frederick Sound, Chatham Strait, and Stephens Passage are considered the best areas in southeast Alaska to see humpback whales. We'll explore all three areas, starting with Frederick Sound. With good luck, we'll see some spectacular whale behavior. We may also observe sea otters, orcas, Dall porpoises, puffins, and other interesting seabirds. We’ll spend the night at an island group called The Brothers, where we can take our skiff or kayaks to observe sea lions. A gorgeous hike through a rainforest also awaits us at these islands.
We’ll continue to Five Fingers lighthouse for a shore excursion, then further onward to the native town of Kake.

Days 8-9: We'll visit Baranof Warm Springs for a relaxing soak and a chance to hike to a lake above picturesque falls. Our voyage will take us to Admiralty Island National Monument, which has the highest concentration of brown bears (grizzlies) and nesting bald eagles in North America.

Day 10: Our last stop will be at St. Lazaria Island, a wildlife refuge, where we should see tufted puffins, pigeon guillemots, rhinoceros auklets, and several other bird species. We expect to reach Sitka about noon, weather permitting. Sitka, rich in Native American (Tlingit), Russian, and American history, deserves at least a day of exploration after the trip. Visit the Sitka National Historic Park, which memorializes the battle of Sitka in 1804 between the Russians and the Tlingits, and contains remarkable Tlingit and Haida totems. On the way, stop by wonderful native exhibits at the Sheldon Jackson Museum. Near the park is the Alaska Raptor Rehabilitation Center, which provides medical treatment to various birds of prey and allows you to see these creatures up close.

Getting There

You will need to make your transportation arrangements to arrive in Wrangell and depart from Sitka. Alaska Airlines serves both cities. In both places, taxis are available between the harbor, airport, and town. There is much to do and see in Southeast Alaska, and this trip can serve as the centerpiece for an extended trip. The trip leader can provide you with suggestions for ways to extend your trip.

Accommodation and Food

Our home will be a 65-foot-long motorized steel ship. Built in 1973 as a private yacht, this U.S. Coast Guard-certified passenger vessel boasts a motorized inflatable raft for shore excursions, and two inflatable double kayaks for quietly exploring islands and shorelines. The knowledgeable crew consists of a captain, a professional cook, and an experienced deckhand. We'll also have a naturalist onboard with expertise in marine biology, ornithology, or anthropology.

The yacht sleeps 12 passengers in six private, fully-heated cabins, and has three toilets and two hot showers. The main deck features an airy salon, a library, a galley, and a dining area. Large windows permit unobstructed views out all sides, and access to the outside is easy. The upper bridge deck provides a good vantage point for spotting wildlife and has comfortable seating for passengers who wish to learn about navigation. Please note that smoking is not permitted aboard the ship.

The small vessel allows access to shoreline areas inaccessible to larger ships. We will spend days sailing from place to place, observing marine life, and stopping for shore excursions. All meals will be onboard the ship. We will have a social hour before dinner and evening discussions about our experiences that day. Our nights will be spent anchored in quiet coves. The trip price includes all meals, starting with lunch on the first day and ending with breakfast on the last day.

A professional cook will prepare all the meals. Volunteer help is always welcome. There will be ample quantities of fresh vegetables, fruits, grains, and dairy products. Delicious, wholesome meals will be served family- or buffet-style. Complimentary wine is served before and with dinner. Otherwise, guests are responsible for bringing their own alcoholic beverages or soft drinks. Coffee and tea are also provided.

Trip Difficulty

This will be a leisurely trip. Hikes will be optional and generally easy, covering moderate terrain. Insects should not be a significant problem, although mosquito repellent may be useful on some hikes. You must be able to descend a short ladder to board an inflatable raft for shore excursions. Daytime temperatures usually range from 55-85 degrees. Although we should have lots of sunshine, we must be prepared for rain and gusty winds. The minimum age for the trip is 12 years. All participants in Sierra Club water trips must sign liability releases for both the Sierra Club and concessionaire.
Interests may vary from one person to another, so the equipment list may vary a bit too. You'll certainly want to bring layered clothing with excellent raingear and knee-length rubber boots, a camera, and binoculars. Photographers of all skill levels will have ample opportunities to take pictures of wildlife and scenery. For all except serious photographers, a point-and-shoot camera -- preferably with a zoom lens -- works quite well. Those who are particularly interested in bird-watching will have a treat in store, so good binoculars are essential. Although this is not a fishing trip, there will be some limited opportunities to fish.

An Alaska fishing license is required and may be purchased in Wrangell or online before the trip. You will receive a detailed clothing and equipment list specific to this trip from the leader after signing up
Conservation

The Alaska Inland Passage is a vast and delightful wilderness, but human impacts increasingly affect this area. Drawing upon the knowledge of our crew and your trip leader, we will experience and discuss several environmental issues for southeast Alaska, including logging in the Tongass National Forest, salmon fisheries, and climate change. Further information will be coming as we prepare for our trip together.

Sierra Club outings in Alaska and Arctic Canada are special experiences in true wilderness, but they also carry an element of risk. Trip locales are often remote and away from the amenities of civilization, including sophisticated medical care and immediate evacuation possibilities. Many of our Alaska and Arctic Canada trips now carry satellite phones, but even with this technology, communication with the outside world can be difficult and emergency assistance can be days away. Weather in Alaska and Arctic Canada is unpredictable, and inclement weather can be severe. Among other hazards are cold river and stream crossings, tidal activity, calving glaciers, the psychological effects of remoteness, and the presence of large wild animals. You're in good hands, though, so don't worry: your trip leaders have vast experience in the Last Frontier, and they'll provide all the guidance you need.
This is a trip limited to 10 Persons
Yukon Territory, in northwestern Canada, abounds with rivers -- both remote and well-traveled. Paddling opportunities range from lakes to easy rivers to currents boasting roaring rapids around every turn. It is a paddler's paradise, and you will see many cars with canoes tied on top as you visit our starting town of Whitehorse. To be a Yukoner almost certainly means you spend time in summer "messing around" in boats.
This journey begins in the heart of the Yukon, and our first of three rivers is a scenic, peaceful delight. The McQuesten River is named in honor of Jack McQuesten, the explorer, trader, and prospector who is remembered in history for founding the towns of Circle, Alaska as well as Ft. Reliance, Yukon Territory. Today we meet him whenever we're drinking the 100-proof whiskey and honey liqueur that bears his nickname, Captain Jack.

As usual, Sierra Club focuses on the Conservation issues and brings these to light, which is one of the purposes for which the Sierra Club was created;

One of the conservation issues we will investigate in this outing is the long-term effects of the mining practices of the 1890s and the early part of the 20th century. Many pollutants were widely used that are now known to be highly hazardous.
Another interesting area of study is the overall impact of human settlement along the river corridors and the impact of thousands of miners at a time converging during the gold rush days.
During more industrialized eras, many pieces of equipment were simply abandoned along the rivers. Sunken boats were left where they went down. We will discuss the impact these might have on river quality even today.
Trapping and hunting were extensively practiced along the Teslin and Yukon. These activities provided a decent living for many folks, yet they also depleted numbers of some species. We'll discuss how trapping and hunting might have left an impact that's felt in modern times, but also consider the benefits of a hunting/trapping culture.

The McQuesten runs clear and strong. Our best opportunities for viewing wildlife are on this stretch, and we will watch for beaver, moose, grizzly and black bear, bald and golden eagles, ducks, geese, loons, and more. There is good fishing on the McQuesten for arctic grayling, northern pike, and even lake trout. There will be the occasional deteriorating prospector's cabin to remind us of human history in the late 1800s and 1900s. The river does not contain rapids, but we will need to be alert for the possibility of a downed tree or other vegetation in our path. Campsites are peaceful, and we can expect solitude here. The McQuesten area is in the traditional territory of the Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nations people. Their name translates to "Big River People," a reference to the Yukon River.

After reaching the confluence of the McQuesten and Stewart Rivers, we travel parallel to the Klondike Highway for about 12 miles. The river here follows the path of the Tintina Trench, a geologic feature that creates a natural flyway for huge numbers of migratory birds in the spring and fall. Over 200,000 sandhill cranes use this corridor to travel to and from their tundra nesting grounds, their distinctive calls reverberating from the cliffs of the Trench. We once again head away from the noise of cars and trucks to continue down the Stewart River. This stretch of the Stewart is isolated, but we will likely will come across others sharing the river corridor along the way -- either staying in cabins, working at summer fish camps, or traveling in canoes or power boats.

Finally we reach the confluence with the mighty Yukon River. It is a thrill to paddle down the river highway that was key to so much history. We can imagine the mighty stern wheel paddle boats that were the workhorses of the north, as well as all the early trappers and prospectors who traveled in canoes, as we still do now. Our encounters with other people will increase, but we still hope to view some wildlife. This interesting stretch of the Yukon speeds us with ever more excitement each day towards our final destination of Dawson City

Dawson City is truly a town that reflects an earlier era. Wooden sidewalks, stately Victorians, false-fronted wooden shops, and sod-roofed cabins all share space with modern facilities. Dawson City has dining (both fine and casual), saloons like Diamond Tooth Gertie's that still stage dancehall reviews like those seen 100 years ago, museums, and shops galore. You don't need a car to stroll the sights of downtown, or to visit the excellent museums or cabins of Jack London and Robert Service a few blocks uptown. And you can easily imagine the Dawson City of the 1890s, when it was the hub of the last massive gold rush of the West. The Dawson City Music Festival began in 1975. It is very popular, with people arriving from all over Canada, as well as other countries, to enjoy the weekend full of folk, bluegrass, and native music -- and even blues, jazz, and rock music. The town will be at its lively best, and we can expect to be a part of the warm Yukon hospitality and merriment.
Capacity: 10

Trip Itinerary;

Day 1: Assemble in downtown Whitehorse, where we meet our shuttle, load gear, and drive to our put-in near the small town of Mayo. After lunch, we will load the canoes and travel a short distance downriver to our first campsite.

Days 2-4: We paddle the scenic McQuesten. We will load our canoes after breakfast for the day's adventure. After we reach camp, there are possibilities for walks on the hillsides and for trying our luck at catching a few fish. We will be happy to include fish in any dinner or breakfast!

Days 5-10: These days we will float the Stewart River and a segment of the Yukon River. There should be time for a layover day, so we'll be watching for a good campsite to relax in. All paddling days include a stop for a restful lunch, and other possible stops for a stretch break or for exploring any interesting looking old cabins or settlements. On Day 10, we'll arrive in Dawson City, where will head for our lodging and a nice shower!

Day 11: We have the entire day to attend the Dawson City Music Festival, which is an eclectic mix of folk, bluegrass, indigenous, rock, blues, and any other genre that has struck the fancy of the festival organizers for the year. One can always take a break to see the sights of Dawson City, visit museums, or go shopping.

Day 12: Our festival ticket is still good. Each of us will decide our own itinerary for the day, and in the early afternoon we will meet our shuttle for the return to Whitehorse.

Getting there and Back;
The trip begins and ends in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada. Whitehorse is a wonderful small town, full of friendly people, lots of cars with canoes strapped on top, four recording studios, cafes, museums, and riverfront activities. Plan to arrive in Whitehorse by July 6. We will have a no-host gathering that evening to meet each other, ask questions, get instructions for the next day, and hopefully have a short presentation on conservation issues from a member of a local organization. You may also wish to stay in town a day after our trip to do some sightseeing.

Air service to Whitehorse can be purchased through Air Canada or through the Yukon carrier, Air North.

Food and Lodging;

We recommend that you arrive at least one full day before the trip starts, and that you plan your departure at least one day after our return, as weather can sometimes cause major delays. In addition, you may want to do some sightseeing in Whitehorse. Participants on this outing will arrange their own pre- and post-trip lodging. We will send a list of hotel options after you sign up for the trip.

We will arrange an early evening get-together on July 6 to check in, say hello, and answer any last-minute equipment questions. Similarly, there will be a no-host optional dinner in Whitehorse on the evening of our last day. The first meal that will be provided on this trip is lunch on Day One. The final meal provided will be lunch on Day 10. Meals in Dawson City are not provided. For the long drive back to Whitehorse, our group will decide if we want to stop at a restaurant on the way back (not provided) or if we want to brown-bag it (we can provide this).

Our meals will be hearty and easy to prepare out-of-doors. Vegetarians can be accommodated, as well as folks with some dietary restrictions. We will have some fresh foods, and hope to bring an ice chest for keeping a few things cool. Other components of our meals will include foods that are more typical of backpacking trips.

Sierra Club outings are based on shared participation. One way we share is by taking turns being the cooks for the day, with one of the leaders helping out. Let's see if we can create some scrumptious meals outdoors that even have a bit of a gourmet flare!

All of our nights prior to our stay in Dawson City will be spent camping along the rivers; hence accommodations during the trip will be in personal tents. We will ask you to provide information on the type of tent you have in order to be sure your tent is rain- and wind-worthy enough for our outing. Tent sharing is encouraged for those willing to do so in order to reduce our footprint on the land and to make sure we can fit all of our gear into the canoes. Participants will bring their own sleeping bags and pads, though it may be possible to rent these in Whitehorse.

Two nights lodging in Dawson City are being provided in the trip price. We will be staying at a charming bunkhouse, where we have small but clean shared rooms. Showers and bathrooms are just down the hall. The bunkhouse is an historic building that has been fully modernized. All rooms open to the covered open-air halls, which are balconies wrapping the building. It is just a short walk to the riverfront stroll along the Klondike River.

Accessibility;

This adventure is moderate in difficulty. We will be paddling most days of the trip, beginning mid-morning and ending in the afternoon when we locate a good campsite. When flows are strong, mileage for the day can be high.

All participants on this outing must have experience with tandem canoeing on moving water (rivers). While our trip is easy-moving water for the most part (class I), there may be brief spots that require paddling through a wave train, and on the McQuesten River we may need to negotiate rapidly to skirt a strainer or to make a sharp turn. All paddlers must be able to catch eddies, do peel-outs, move the boat sideways to avoid strainers or rocks, paddle through small wave trains, execute a ferry maneuver, and be familiar with basic reentry strategies in case of a capsize. If these terms are currently unfamiliar, you could take a beginner course in river canoeing and then be ready to join us.

Your trip leaders are also canoeing instructors for the American Red Cross. If you have the time and interest, we can supply you with May, June, and early July dates in 2010 when the Sacramento-Sierra chapter of the ARC will be offering its Fundamentals of Canoeing and Basic River Canoeing courses -- Fundamentals being a requirement to enter the river course. Most people would be interested in the Yukon paddling trip far before these classes are offered, but they could be taken as refreshers.

Although the trip leaders are highly experienced canoeists and have led a previous wilderness canoeing trip in Yukon Territory, neither has paddled the McQuesten, Stewart, or this stretch of the Yukon. Our trip will therefore be an adventure for us all, and some decisions on campsites, mileages, or walks will be made on-trip as conditions are encountered. Participants will hence need to be comfortable with this mild level of uncertainty and be able to cheerfully "go with the flow."

What is equipment is needed;
We will rent efficient, well-maintained tandem canoes from our outfitter in Whitehorse. The canoe rental includes a paddle and a personal flotation device (pfd) for each of us, as well as safety equipment such as painters (end lines), spare paddles, and throw bags. If you prefer to use your own equipment, just let us know.
You will need to have waterproof bags for your sleeping bag and clothing. We will send you suggestions and sizes that will work, and we'll let you know if we can provide any extra drybags. A complete equipment list will be sent to all participants far in advance of the outing.

Things you should Know;
Sierra Club outings in Alaska and Arctic Canada are special experiences in true wilderness, but they also carry an element of risk. Trip locales are often remote, away from the amenities of civilization, including sophisticated medical care and immediate evacuation possibilities.

The payment of a deposit does not confirm you as a member on the trip. Participants must be approved by the trip leader. After signing up for this trip, you will be sent a confirmation packet containing approval materials (Participant Approval Questionnaire, Medical Form, Liability Release Form). Each applicant (including those on the waitlist) must fill out these forms and promptly mail them to the trip leader. The leader will review the approval materials and notify you of your acceptance in a timely manner.Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01388966954868011348noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4840314660246637245.post-63950989370746633712009-12-13T00:03:00.000-08:002009-12-13T00:15:12.686-08:00Winter Sports Adventure, Colorado

Mountain Hut Trip, Holy Cross, Colorado. Cheap flights presents you with yet another Enviroment friendly Adventure trip with Sierra ClubThis Amazing Sierra Club trip begins with your arrival at Denver International Airport (DIA), or Eagle County Airport.
The trip leaders will meet you at either airport, and provide transportation to our staging point in Eagle, Colorado. (you can also drive there yourself if you are located in the US, and wish to take this option) Participants will meet with the organizers and guides late in the afternoon. the meeting will be in the lobby of our comfortable motel to go over trip, safety plans, and gear, and answer any questions you might have before our departure. On the final day of our trip, we should be back at the trail head around lunch time or a little later, and back in Denver around 6:00 p.m. However, due to the uncertainties of mountain weather at this time of year, it probably would be best to plan your departure for the next day.

If you have the time, arriving a day or two early to begin your acclimatization process also would be smart. This trip is strenuous by virtue of the fact that we will start at an elevation of 9,000 feet and our destination is over 11,000 feet; if you are from an elevation lower than 6,000 feet you may find it painful to arrive and climb the next day! More information can be found in the Difficulty, Health and Trip Price sections below.

Day 1: Arrival at DIA or Eagle County Airport. Plan your arrival no later than noon at Denver International Airport. We will schedule one departure, in a van driven by your Denver area co-leaders, arriving in Eagle around 3:00 p.m. If you plan to fly into Eagle County Airport, please plan your arrival no later than 3 p.m. You will be met by your Durango trip leader for our rendezvous with other trip members and co-leaders at a comfortable Eagle motel. Upon arrival we will check into our rooms and then meet in the lobby where we will go over trip plans and answer any questions you may have. This will also give us an opportunity to do a last minute gear check and review our safety plan. Afterwards we will continue conversations over dinner. Overnight Motel.

Day 2: Eagle, CO to trail head to Polar Star Inn. After an early breakfast at the motel, we will board our vehicles for the 15-mile drive to the trail head. We want to get an early start because we have a long, strenuous day ahead of us. From the parking area elevation of 9,000 feet, we must climb about 2,000 feet over a distance of six miles to reach our destination, Polar Star Inn. If you are on skis, you will want to bring climbing skins. Wax or fish scale bottoms on cross-country skis probably won't get you up this mountain. Please don't go cheap on equipment. Overnight Polar Star Inn.

Day 3: Polar Star Inn, Day trip to New York Mountain. We have a variety of activities we can engage in while we spend our next four days at Polar Start Inn. Weather will determine some of what we can do, but if we have a nice day, we will summit New York Mountain. The advantage of having three co-leaders means we will be able to split into smaller groups and explore different activities or destinations on any given day. All registered trip members will receive a copy of the Fulford Quad, the topographic map that covers the area. For those who are interested, we can do some map and compass work, and work with the GPS's we will have with us.

Days 4-6: Day Trips Around Polar Star Inn. The town of Fulford or as it was known in the late 1800's, Nolan's Camp, is about half way between the Yeoman's Park trail head and Polar Star Inn. In some publications it is called a ghost town, but over the years, many of the buildings have been reconstructed or remodeled as summer homes. However, there are some residents who spend the winter, but the only access is via snow-cat, snowmobile, or skis. This is one of the possible destinations for the day. Access is via forest and logging roads, or skiers may ski through the aspens and spruce down to the town. Return is via the same forest roads. There are also numerous forest and logging roads around the area that make for easy day trips on snow shoes or cross country skis. For those with Telemark or AT ski gear, or snow boards, there are gentle to challenging slopes within easy access to Polar Star Inn. We will have the opportunity to explore in small groups some of the breathtaking backcountry that surrounds us. Overnight Polar Star Inn.

Day 7: Polar Star Inn to Eagle/DIA and Home. This morning we will pack up for the descent back to our vehicles. Skiers and boarders can take the road or ski through the trees, but our snow shoers will probably want to take the road. At any rate, it is six miles mostly down hill now, giving up the 2,000 feet we gained on the first day. We should be back at the parking area around lunch time. We will have lunch and depart, those that came in the van headed for DIA, and those who came into Eagle, back there. For those headed for Eagle, we should be there by 3 or 4 p.m., for those going to Denver we will probably be there by 6 p.m. However, due to the uncertainties of mountain weather, it might be best to plan an overnight stay in Denver and your departure for the following day.

Plan your arrival for noon or earlier on Saturday, January 9, 2010. You may fly into Denver International Airport (DIA) from most major cities in the U.S., and if you prefer, fly from DIA to Eagle County Airport in Eagle, CO. Your trip leaders will schedule one pickup at DIA and another at Eagle, depending on trip participant's arrival times, but no later than noon at DIA and 3 p.m. at Eagle County Airport. You also may drive yourself, if you prefer; Eagle is 154 miles west of Denver on I-70. Our meeting place will be at an Eagle motel which will be communicated to trip members in pre-trip communications. If your schedule allows you to arrive a day or two early, it would be wise to give yourself some extra time to acclimatize to the thin air. Denver is the "mile high" city and Eagle is 6,600 feet. Our trail head is at 9,060 feet, and our destination Polar Star Inn is an even loftier 11,040 feet.

Meals and Lodgings
From dinner on Saturday, January 9 through lunch on Friday, January 15, all meals, including snacks are provided. If you have special dietary needs, please let your trip leaders know well in advance. We can accommodate most requests as long as we have sufficient warning. On our first day, food for the trip will be divided between trip members for the climb to the hut, but cooking gear, including all kitchen pots and pans, serving utensils, plates, cups, forks, spoons, and knives, i.e., all necessary kitchen gear, are provided at the hut.

The Polar Star Inn accommodates up to 17 people, in a number of semi-private rooms and one common sleeping area. The only sleeping gear you will need is your sleeping bag. Mattresses and pillows are provided. Sierra Club trips are based on double occupancy, but the nature of the hut is such that you may not have a private room. Accommodations in Eagle, on our first night, will be in double rooms. If you want a single room, please advise us early so we can make the necessary arrangements. Otherwise, singles will be paired up to share the double rooms.

Duties in the hut will be divided to details and scheduled at the beginning of the trip. In addition to breakfast, dinner and kitchen clean up details (lunch will be on your own from materials provided), we will have wood detail (responsibility to split firewood, which is provided, for the cooking and heating stoves), water detail (collect snow to melt for water), and hut cleaning detail (to keep the area swept up and in order while we are there). We will all pitch in to clean the hut up before we leave so that it is clean as it was when we arrived.

This is a strenuous trip by virtue of the altitude and our initial climb from the trail head to the hut. You must be in good physical condition and comfortable on your chosen gear for the initial six miles and 2,000 feet elevation gain. There really is no way to prepare for the altitude, but you should be comfortable skiing or snow shoeing for a full day while covering 6-8 miles with a significant elevation gain. Our, hut where we will be sleeping, is at 11,040 feet so if you have ever had problems with altitude, this trip may not be the one for you. Once at the hut, we have numerous possibilities for day trips over a variety of terrain. The area has many, many forest roads and old logging roads to accommodate snow shoers and cross-country skiers. There are gentle, protected slopes for skiers and boarders, and a more extreme bowls off the east and west sides of New York Mountain. Day destinations may include Fulford, an old mining town that has year-round residents and cabins that only can be reached by snow-cat, snowmobiles, or skis in the winter, Triangle Park, or Bowman Gulch Park.

Health: There will be no trip physician, but your trip leaders have advanced wilderness medical training. Our group will carry emergency medical supplies, but we do not carry medications; you must bring a basic, personal first-aid kit and whatever personal medications you need. Your reservation confirmation packet contains a medical form that must be filled out and submitted to your leaders before you are accepted on the trip. When completing the medical form, realize that your safety – and the group's – depends on candid responses. If you ever have had altitude related illness, or you never have been to altitude, please consult with your personal physician regarding altitude issues. Due to the altitude at which our trip spends 5 days, if you can arrive a day or two early to help your body acclimatize, you will be much more comfortable on our trip.

Equipment, Clothing;
This trip is intended for skiers on Telemark or alpine touring (AT) gear, cross-country skiers, snow boarders, or snow shoers. This is not an instructional trip so you should feel competent on your chosen gear. If you want to rent gear, we should have time to hit the rental shops in Eagle. Skiers will want climbing skins for their skis; if you are a cross-country skier, wax or fish-scale bottoms will not be adequate for our initial climb. Temperatures around this time of year range from freezing to 15 or 20 below zero, and if windy, the wind-chill will be even colder, so bring layers (no cotton) that allow you to accommodate that range of temperatures while resting or exercising. You will want a pack (around 45-55L) that can hold whatever clothing you bring, your sleeping bag, a personal first aid kit, toiletries, other personal gear, and has room for your share of the food that we will be carrying. If you have your own avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe pole, you might want to bring them, but complete avalanche safety gear will be provided for trip members. A detailed equipment list will be provided to registered trip members.
Conservation

Our carbon footprint is becoming a huge issue as global climate changes progress. Everything we do contributes CO2 to the atmosphere, some things more than others. Even coming on this trip adds more greenhouse gases than would be the case if we stayed home, but what can we do to ameliorate our impacts and not totally disrupt our lives? For those of you flying, consider buying carbon offsets from Native Energy (see http://www.sierraclub.org/outings/national/offsets/); we are providing van transportation in order to cut down on the number of separate vehicle trips, and those of you driving yourselves, consider car-pooling (your leaders will coordinate a list on request). Other major contributors of greenhouse gases are the coal-fired power plants that provide energy to our electrical grid. A solution advocated to reduce greenhouse gases has been to live "off the grid". Here is your opportunity to try it out! While staying at Polar Star Inn, heat is provided by wood stoves, cooking is with wood and propane, and lights are propane. Of course, all of these contribute CO2 to the atmosphere, but possibly less (and certainly without the sulfur and mercury contaminants found in coal) than from a large, coal-fired power plant. At other 10th Mountain Division Huts, photo-voltaics provide low-voltage electricity for lights. Each evening we'll be covering topics including climate change, impact on habitat and wildlife and we'll take the time to discuss these and other environmental topics. Participants will learn about conservation actions already taken by Sierra Club, plans for the future and how they might participate. And finally, our stay will give us the opportunity to contemplate what it means to live off the grid.
More about this trip;
There is hardly anyone who has not heard of the 10th Mountain Division,the elite mountaineering troops who trained for three years at Camp Hale, midway between Leadville and Minturn, Colorado on Highway 24, before being committed to battle in World War II with the Allied invasion of Italy, and the fierce battles waged in the mountains of Europe.Their training camp was in some of the highest and most beautiful,rugged mountain country in the continental United States. As an attestation to that remoteness and beauty, the White River National Forest, where Camp Hale was located, and the neighboring Arapaho and Pike National Forests host four Wilderness Areas, the Hunter Fryingpan, the Mt.Massive, the Holy Cross, and the Gore.

The 10th Mountain Division Hut Association, and the huts that comprise it, were built by former 10th Mountain Division members, their family and friends, beginning in 1980. Six of the huts were built by family to honor soldiers lost in the Italian campaigns. The huts, of which there are now 29 either owned by or owned privately and managed by the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association, are located roughly in a U-shape from Eagle, Colorado on the north and west to Vail on the north and east, with the bottom of the U at Leadville. All of the huts are truly "high altitude", with most at or above 11,000 feet. As a result of their altitude and remoteness, all are "off the grid" meaning they rely on wood or propane for heating and cooking, low-voltage, solar photo-voltaic systems for electric lights, or in some cases,propane gas lighting, and none are connected to the electrical grid.

The Sierra Club's hut, the Polar Star Inn, is located at an altitude of 11,040 feet with access from the Yeoman Park trail head at 9,060 feet, about 15 miles from Eagle on a plowed, Forest Service Road. It is on the western side of the Holy Cross Wilderness Area, and northwest of New York Mountain (12,550 feet). The name "Polar Star" refers to a mine that was to the north of the site of the hut at an altitude of 11,260 feet and active in the late 1870's and 80's. While the six miles from the trail head to the hut is a strenuous climb, once there, the opportunity to explore numerous forest and logging roads, and the relative safety of the surrounding terrain, make it an ideal location to spend five days exploring this backcountry winter wonderland.Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01388966954868011348noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4840314660246637245.post-89286115659788316762009-12-12T22:24:00.000-08:002009-12-12T23:22:48.917-08:00Sierra Club Yoga and HikingBackpacking, Trekking, Lodging, Rafting, Sailing, Biking, Canoe, Kayaking..

A shuttle to trailheads is included in the price of the trip.

Getting There
For those who are flying in, a shuttle will be available to facilitate transportation of participants from and to the SFO airport. The shuttle will be available at specific times -- please contact the trip leader for specifics. Driving instructions will be sent out once you are approved for the trip.
This trip is based at a rustic but charming lodge in Mill Valley, which is located on the Panoramic Highway and just above Muir Woods. It is furnished with a very large hardwood floor area where we will practice yoga. The lodge also has a large stone fireplace in a comfortable living room, a porch area, and a large outside deck. Sleeping arrangements are in dorms of 4-6 beds, with a few private bedrooms for couples. Bathrooms are shared. Please bring towels, sheets, and a pillowcase, or sleeping bag if you prefer. Blankets and pillows are provided. Participants are not allowed to remain at the lodge during the day unless a leader is on the premises.

Accomodation and Food

Our experienced cook plans healthy, hearty, vegetarian-friendly meals, and following Sierra Club Outings custom we will all assist by taking turns with the preparation and clean-up. We will prepare individual lunches each morning to carry with us on the trail. One evening we will dine at a local restaurant that is known for its excellent food. We will work with you to accommodate specific dietary requirements as much as possible. However, any dietary restrictions must be discussed in detail with the leader well in advance of the trip.
The hikes are designed for agile and active hikers who can comfortably keep a pace of two miles per hour.

Conservation

San Francisco Bay and its outlying areas contain many wetlands, old-growth forests, and geologic features. Much has been lost to development since the Gold Rush days, but much has been saved, mostly due to the heroic efforts of individuals and local environmental organizations. Marin County is a shining example of this. More than 60 percent of its land is protected in public ownership and easements through national parks, state parks, watershed, county open space, and land trusts. We will experience firsthand this assemblage of public lands and learn some of how much of it came about.
The staff is the best we have ever met. They treat us like family. The service and food are both great. The beach is fabulous. There is lots to do if that's what you want, or you can relax on the beach or by the pool and you don't get hassled by vendors or time shares. I would recommend this hotel at the top of my list. If you have not been to Blue Bay then you have not been to Mexico. Once you go there you will definitely go back.

Conditions and Terms

Extra-person charges may apply and vary depending on hotel policy.
Photo identification and credit card or cash deposit are required at check-in for incidental charges.
Special requests are subject to availability upon check-in and may incur additional charges.
